FRENCH CONNECTION

WHO KNEW???

Last week we ended our walk near Hen and Chicken Bay, I was expecting lots of chook references in the blog, but...............

as we continue on the shore we discover some French (Canadian) Connections - Canada Bay, Exile Bay and France Bay. A little known episode in our history is revealed; after the Lower Canada Rebellion of 1838, 60 rebels were deported to Australia and spent their time constructing Parramatta Road and collecting oyster shells for making lime. Bayview Park has a memorial to these rebels, you can read more on Wikipedia.

Starting in Charleton Street, Abbotsford, we follow the shore as far as possible, looking across the bay at the Animal Quarantine Station and other POIs from last week.

A loop is not possible, so the ferry from Cabarita Wharf to Abbotsford Wharf leaves at 10.25am, which should be good timing after a coffee on the point.

Steve clocks this at over 8kms so just imagine what my ipod will read.

LOOK OUT - CHISWICK, HERE WE COME

NOT QUITE IN THE CHOOK YARD..................

This Sunday we start our walk on the corner of Kokoda St and Blackwall Point Road, Chiswick. Park the car in Kokoda St, coffee afterwards in Amoretti"s cafe in Bechert Road (bet you've never been to Bechert Rd!!!)

This is a picturesque walk,(only about 7kms); it takes in some familiar territory for those of us whose sons rowed for High. We visit the beautiful old mansion built by the Renwick family, the old animal quarantine station in Abbotsford and we see the Searle memorial, an interesting post sticking up in the middle of the waterway.

Usual start time of 8am, let me know either by SMS or a comment here if you are coming - the weather forecast is good.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!

Apologies for the late post.................things have been a little hectic chez Ramsey.

Tomorrow we rendezvous at 8am in the carpark for the Gunners Barracks in Suakin Drive, Georges Heights.

This distance might seem short but the track includes stairs(yes!!) and some hills and there is an opportunity to lengthen the distance and take in the gun emplacements past the oval - if there is time.

Burnt Orange is the cafe we have in mind, a lovely spot indeed.

Hope to see you bright and early Sunday morn,

Bernadette

REMEMBRANCE DAY

11 NOVEMBER

Steve and I won't join you this Sunday so we have the default plan of the Bay Run. Sue tells me there is a new cafe where the Apia Club used to be, now a function centre called Le Montage - 38 Frazer Street, Lilyfield.

So without knowing anything about parking there, how about you meet at Le Montage at 8am and have a great walk.

Happy birthday Val!

Cheers,
B

LET'S TRY LIZZIE....AGAIN

IN AN EASTERLY DIRECTION....

For a change of scene this Sunday we will head over to the eastern side. This is an interesting walk with lots of variation. Passing by Garden Island, Elizabeth Bay and Rushcutters Bay, we also discover some interesting steps and hidden shortcuts to historic Elizabeth Bay House and delightful Fred McElhone Park, one of the most picturesque spots you will find.

There are hills and flats, we designed the walk so that we go DOWN the steps(phew!), the distance  measures 7.7kms so it should be a good challenge.

We will meet at 8am in the pedestrian Plaza opposite the Finger Wharf, on Cowper Wharf Road, near pedestrian lights.  On street parking for 2 hours is available if you make a right hand turn after the Shell Service Station on Cowper Wharf Road.

Could you let me know if you will be coming, either by commenting here or by SMS as we have a few scratchings this Sunday.

Cheers,
Bernadette
