EOFY WALK

Sunday June 1st

Steve and I won't be walking this Sunday but we have planned a beauty for you.

The link appears below but I will scan and email a road map to print out so you don't get lost in the wilds of Balmain.

The only tricky part might be when you come across the Maritime Police headquarters........cross Ewenton Park and walk behind the Police buildings along a path beside the big gates. This leads to a ramp or set of stairs which takes you into Datchett Street.

We thought to start and finish the walk in Rowntree Street near the corner of Cameron Street, close to a cafe called the Charlotte........

Have fun and leave a comment here if you are going to be there on Sunday morning.

Sunday June 24th - just add 'bush'

Now we add 'bush' to burbs and bays.........

This Sunday we are ticking all the boxes. We have a walk starting at Waverton and taking in some suburban roads, views over the harbour, and a little bit of a bush track.

The walk is 7km (same as the bay run) but it has some hills and stairs to increase the degree of difficulty.

No worries about wet weather as there is only a small section which could be muddy and the steps have timber edges.

We will start at the intersection of Balls Head Road and Woolcott Street at 8am. Parking should be plentiful around here at this time, and of course there is a cafe close by, with several others at Waverton Station.

We will print out some hard copies of the route to give you on Sunday, we don't want anyone getting lost, and it does wend it's way a little bit.

Don't forget to either comment here or SMS to let me know if you are coming.

Sunday - lovely sun...day

Well done party of 8 last Sunday, we made the sun shine, and a good time was had by all. The bay run turned out to be a good option considering the weather on Saturday. I will find another suitable wet weather track for future weekends, maybe a less busy one.

For those interested in using some technology, the apps we talked about on Sunday are - for iphone and ipod touch - Nike + GPS (times and maps the route, ipod doesn't allow maps but iphone does) and for androids - MapMyRun - (free, also have a look at their website.)

Steve and I have our eye on a walk at Balls Head for the weekend - stay tuned.

MORE WALKING TIPS

Even though you were all rude about my walking tips last Sunday, I am determined to persist, so here's more..............Consider that your head is the heaviest part of your body. As well as striking the ground with your heel, keeping the toes up then rolling onto the ball of the foot before pressing into the big toe.......... you need to keep your head up and eyes straight ahead. Use your peripheral vision to check the ground for obstacles, then return your head to the upright position.

Makes sense really, if you are looking at the ground with head forward, and trip over, where is the heaviest part of your body going to take you????

Cheers

Sunday June 17th - CHATSWOOD HERE WE COME.

Hi Everyone,

We are heading for Chatswood this Sunday at 8am. The Lane Cove River Loop beckons, a 5km walk with a few hills which should get the heart rate up.
Parking is available in the Northern Suburbs Athletics field, Mowbray Road West, so be there or be square.

We leave at 8am sharp so don't be late, please either comment here or SMS to let me know if you will be coming.

Welcome

Hi fellow burbnbay walk/runners,

Thanks for your emails recording walks last weekend, I am not so sure you should follow me.....I managed to get lost on the Bay Run and do an extra few kms - the stairs at Balmain Shores might feature in future training walks now I have tested them out.

Sue and Pete discovered a new bay run cafe at Five Dock, Nield Park Pavillion, good coffee and well located for the end of a training walk.

I am plotting the track for Sunday 17th, so check here for more details later in the week.

Remember....once a week is not enough (where have I heard that before?) keep the walking regime up during the week and get out despite the rain, a little bit of water never hurt anyone and why risk cabin fever?

WALKING TIPS

Here's a few tips for walking well.

This sounds elementary but is often forgotten, the act of walking is actually losing and regaining balance. A good walking action includes striking with the heel, rolling onto the ball of the foot and pressing the big toe into the ground before striking with the other heel. This might feel strange until you get used to using the big toe as the last point of contact with the ground.

It is very important to lift the toes up as you strike with the heel, this avoids tripping and is a great habit to adopt. If ankles feel stiff, circle them often through the week to keep the as mobile as possible.

There will be a demo on Sunday morning if these tips make no sense.

Cheers,
Bernadette
